Oops, I did it again
...not, not broke up with Justin Timberlake. I forgot to update my page.
How was your summer? We had a most eventful summer, which included the arrival of a nuevo curio cabinet so I can display all my purple-haired dollies. Thanks, Bosco!!
We also had a criminally fun vacation in Europe, where, when we weren't buying out the local toy dealers (see above), we got to consume copious amounts of wine and cheese (avec our hospitable French chum, Philip). And thanks to our thoughtful Dutch host, Daan, we got a special guided tour of Amsterdam's fabledred light district. AND I got to meet long-time idol Irv Kershner, director of The Empire Strikes Back, the greatest Star Wars film ever.
And, of course, I've still been receiveing piles and piles of weird dolls.
Candy Candy
- Candy Candy
- Found not one, but two dolls from the Italian company Polistil's Candy Candy series. To my knowledge, this 70s-era anime about a little orphan girl has never been translated into English, although it's appeared in Canada, and of course, Italy. I'm not too familiar with what toys may have been produced for the series, though I know there's a lot of Japanese market stuff that turns up on auction. The back of the Polistil doll boxes shows a huge variety of outfits in the series. The doll itself is cute, with prominent starry starry shoujo eyes.
Azone, Volks, and the like
- Combat Nurse Lycee
- This gorgeous, gorgeous doll from Azone sports the characteristically well-made outfit (look at all the little buttons! and she's wearing bloomers!). Never mind that her bright wine red hair would be a sure draw for sniper fire.
- Lycee Love Impulse
- This doll is really the second edition of her twin, Lycee Love Blitz, albeit with a groovy new blue plaid trim. Both dolls share killer boots, silly hats, and purple highlights in their hair.
- Who's That Girl Kana
- A limited edition boxed doll from Volks's Who's That Girl series, Kana looks killer in an outfit that includes kilt, beret, and stripey sox. And check out her mysterious smile.
- Ring of the Niebeliungen Royce
- This is the second of three dolls made by Volks, evidently for a video game based on The Ring of the Niebelungen. And, no, I don't recall a character named "Royce" wearing kitty-cat ears in Wagner's original, but then I'm prefer power pop to opera. Be that as it may, Royce has got a damn fine eye print, and so many groovy little accessories, she requires an instruction manual! (Helpfully, it's all written in Japanese.)
- Momoko ver. 03AN
- I have a love/hate affair going with Momoko-san. For every must-have doll in the series so far, PetWorks seems to spit out the overdone, the overpriced, and the merely boring. This gal is, however, a winner. I love the classy, unique packaging job What totally plunged me into doll ecstasy however, was the fact that she comes clad in a pink jumpsuit, and packaged with a traffic cone! I also like the cute pixie haircut.
- Sam Lee
- From the HK company Estate, which also made the very cool (and much more expensive) versions of Sam with an authentic, full-color tatoo. This version does not lack for amusement, as fur coat-clad Sam is packaged with a cigar and an apertif. And check out those shoes! Push a button on Sam's tummy, and he'll babble for a while in Chinese, topped by a smarmy laugh.
Takara
- Cosmo Lube Licca
- A.K.A. Oil Change Licca. Don't you wanna live in a country where you can buy Licca dolls at Quickie Lube? This dollie, actually one of a series, came dressed in a black outfit, (the better to conceal those stubborn LIO oil stains, I guess) with extra silver and gold dresses
and accessories. Do you get the feeling that Japanese garages are somehow way cooler than the ones in the states? Very nice face on this gal.
- PostPet Momo Licca
- The first Licca issued to commemorate the disturbing email software creature, Momo Bear. Momo, fashionably clad in pink fur would obviously rather be logged in. Otaku Licca-chan? The set obligingly includes, among other oddments, a Licca-sized Macintosh.
- Momolita punk Licca
- Neat Licca-chan designed by the designer team known as "Momolita." Licca-chan has never been so punk in her kilt and leather jacket and fishnets. Her hair has been dyed a flaming red. This doll has some great accessories, including a leather bag and high, high platform shoes.
- Victorian Maiden Jenny
- O, how long I waited for this shipping carton to arrive chez moi! Jenny, comfy in her lavender coffin, is all dressed in her goth finery, including very Victorian blond ringlets.
- Castle Chinese Lina with purple hair
- This groovy doll (from Licca Castle) is decked out in a purple Chinese outfit (complete with little purple covers on her hair!) which perfectly matches her oodles of purple hair. And no, her eyes are NOT purple. You can't have everything!
- Castle Kaori with purple hair
- Speaking of purple hair (weren't we just?), this Castle Kaori was also manufactured with lovely lavender hair AS WELL AS purple highlights in her eyes!
- Castle Kisara with purple hair
- Continuing on our purple theme, this doll, which I have dubbed Tiki Goddess Kisara came from the Castle with a kooky purple outfit and kicky purple hair.
- Takashimaya Kisara with grey hair
- An oldie but goodie, this Kisara was only available from the Takashimaya department store. She has proved quite popular with collectors due to her hair and eye coloring.
- Castle Kisara with grey hair
- Of course, if you were unlucky enough to miss out on Takashimaya Kisara, you could bounce off to Licca Castle to pick up this version with pale blue eyes.
Pullip
I fully blame my friend Tania for my newest addiction, BIG HEADED DOLLS.
- Pullip Street
- From Jun Planning, the company that's been issuing those truly spectacular Nightmare Before Xmas dolls. Street has quickly turned into one of my favorite dolls. Might be her cool hair and eye color combo (the eyes move side to side). She's also got some cool accessories, including a messenger bag and Pullip skateboard. A booklet shows the other dolls in the first series.
- Pullip Debut
- The first Pullip doll I ever received, this gal came with a limited edition (an beautifully detailed) bicycle. I am still knocked out by her humongous green eyes.
- Pullip vs. Blythe!
- It's Big Head Big Battel! Pullip Moon (left) has height and flexibility on her side, but Asian Butterfly Blythe has cunning and ever-changing eye colors on hers.
